Germany: German Postal Service prints 20 Rudolf Hess Stamps

May 21, 2008

Neo-Nazis in Germany used the personalized stamp service from the German postal service (Deutsche Post) to create 20 stamps with the picture of Adolf Hitler’s deputy Rudolf Hess.

Since February, Deutsche Post has been providing the service which enables the design of individual stamps via the internet. Dirk Klasen, who is responsible for the project, said that the company planned to review its control procedures as a result of the incident. Postal workers try to check the images chosen by customers, but it is impossible to make the system foolproof.

Rudolf Hess, who committed suicide in Berlin’s Spandau prison in 1987 at the age of 93, is a hero in the German far-right scene.
