Germany: German Physician’s Union (BDI) honored a former Nazi doctor for his achievements

May 26, 2008

The BDI, a German physicians’ union, awarded former SS member Dr. Hans-Joachim Sewering the highest honor. The 92-year-old doctor received a medal and was praised for his medical achievement.

Sewering joined the SS in 1933 at the age of 17. After the war, he served as President of the German physicians’ group from 1973 to 1978.  He resigned in 1978 after being accused of sending patients to a euthanasia centre when he worked at a tuberculosis hospital in 1942. In 1993 he resigned as president-elect of the World Medical Association due to protest about his past.
