Berlin, Germany: Antisemitic Chants During a Football Game
On Saturday, August 9th, football clubs Tennis Borussia Berlin and Energie Cottbus played each other in the first round of the German football cup in Berlin’s Mommsen stadium. The supporters of Energie, known for their right-wing tendencies, brought allies with them from other clubs with right-wing followings such as 1. FC Union Berlin, Victoria Frankfurt, and even Italy’s Lazio Roma.
During the game, leftist supporters of Tennis Borussia were yelled at with chants, such as “Berlin Berlin Jews Berlin” by Energie fans, according to eye witnesses. Later on, Energie fans tried to attack the Tennis Borussia followers. This is were the police came in, who were also attacked. Finally, 15 police officers were lightly injured and nine attackers were arrested.
Back in 2005, Energie Cottbus fans became infamous for showing a huge antisemitic banner during a game of Energie against Dynamo Dresden.
